Get It Right the First Time: Lessons from LPL Focus 2026

I had the chance to attend LPL Focus 2026 in San Diego this August, along with thousands of other advisors, operations professionals and team leaders. LPL's official recap focused on the big picture strategy of pairing growth planning, technology, and talent with the right service partner, but I want to share a more practical view of what these changes mean for the clients we serve every day. Two sessions stuck with me the most: a deep dive on operational excellence and an energizing talk on "friction fighting" from the owner of the Savannah Bananas.

The Operational Excellence session reinforced something we at Flatwater Wealth already try to live out daily: excellence is a mindset, not a checklist. The core message was simple. Get it right the first time, since even small mistakes create processing delays, rework, and lost client trust. The session closed with eight takeaways, from double checking forms and using checklists to catch errors, to real time request tracking and ongoing training through the Office Professional certification programs.

The second standout session came from Jesse Cole of the Savannah Bananas, who reframed client service through the lens of being a "friction fighter." His message was to put myself in my client's shoes, hunt for small frustrations, and eliminate them before they become complaints. He pushed the room toward genuine engagement; doing for one client what you wish you could do for many, listening carefully, and celebrating personal moments.

One of the most meaningful sessions I attended covered how LPL supports clients and families through loss. The focus was less on procedure and more on care and making sure families never have to navigate that process alone. It's something we handle regularly in our office, walking families through the process step by step after a death. AI driven monitoring will eventually add another layer of protection, catching and safeguarding accounts quickly so families can focus on grieving rather than paperwork. But the patience and compassion we bring to those conversations is what really makes the difference.

Tying it back to LPL's broader strategy, the takeaway across every session was consistent. Technology and process improvements only matter if they free up time for the human moments that build client relationships. Whether it was getting things right the first time or fighting friction to engage more deeply, the goal is the same: Clear out the busywork so our team can focus on making a bigger impact for our clients.
